Engineering enhanced thermoelectric properties in zigzag graphene nanoribbons

چکیده
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons in the presence of extended line defects, substrate impurities, and edge roughness along the nanoribbon’s length. A nearest-neighbor tight-binding model for the electronic structure and a fourth nearest-neighbor force constant model for the phonon bandstructure are used. For transport, we employ quantum mechanical non-equilibrium Green’s function simulations. Starting from the pristine zigzag nanoribbon structure that exhibits very poor thermoelectric performance, we demonstrate how after a series of engineering design steps the performance can be largely enhanced. Our results could be useful in the design of highly efficient nanostructured graphene nanoribbon–based thermoelectric devices.VC 2012 American Institute of Physics. Enhanced Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in Edge Disordered Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibilit...
متن کاملEngineering the Thermoelectric Power Factor of Metallic Graphene Nanoribbons
In this work we engineer the thermoelectric (TE) properties of metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbons by the introduction of extended line defects and positively charged substrate impurities. We show that, in such a way, an asymmetry in the transmission of electrons and holes can be created, which allows separation of hot and cold carriers and will provide a very high TE power factor.
متن کاملSpin-polarized transport through a zigzag-edge graphene flake embedded between two armchair nanoribbons electrodes
We study the coherent spin-polarized transport through a zigzag-edge graphene flake (ZGF), using Hubbard model in the nearest neighbor approximation within the framework of the Green function’s technique and Landauer formalism. The system considered consists of electrode/ (ZGF)/electrode, in which the electrodes are chosen to be armchair nanoribbons. The study was performed for two types of ele...

Qiang Lu and Rui Huang Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, University of Texas, Austin, Texas 78712, USA ABSTRACT Based on atomistic simulations, the nonlinear elastic properties of monolayer graphene nanoribbons under quasistatic uniaxial tension are predicted, emphasizing the effect of edge structures (armchair and zigzag, without and with hydrogen passivation). T...
متن کاملErratum: Phosphorene nanoribbon as a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications
In this work, the electronic properties of phosphorene nanoribbons with different width and edge configurations are studied by using density functional theory. It is found that the armchair phosphorene nanoribbons are semiconducting while the zigzag nanoribbons are metallic. The band gaps of armchair nanoribbons decrease monotonically with increasing ribbon width. By passivating the edge phosph...
